Cry Baby
I think I cried more yesterday at church than I have in my entire life.
Yesterday we held one very scaled-down service. We met at 10am except we had no children's church, signs, banners, coffee, hospitality area, or connection table. There was a small worship team, minimal media, and metal chairs. We minimized our set-up to give our volunteers a break. It was one of my favorite services we did all year.
OK, back to the crying. It started during the last song of worship. Sometimes the presence of God brings me to tears; this was one of those times. Then I got up to preach. The message was mainly about how in 2009 GBCK lived out our core mission which is to develop our faith, deepen our connections, and devote our lives to God's mission.
I got choked up at different times during the sermon as I retraced GBCK's 2009 faith journey. As I reflect back on yesterday, I think certain things trigger emotion in me:
• Change lives: I believe every person sitting in those chairs represents a miracle. Each person is a testimony to God's power to change lives. Each life tells the story of God's crazy love for his people.
• Pride: I'm proud of GBCK, and it has nothing to do with me. I'm proud of how the GBCK community is trying to live out their relationship with God. I know their struggles, I know their pain, yet they are faithful. It's a privilege to serve as their pastor.
• The Gospel: Jesus made it possible again to have a relationship with the Heavenly Father, and I want to help others to do the same. The amazing grace of God is overwhelming at times.
The crying isn't melodrama, it's genuine. I get embarrassed by it and wish it wouldn't happen at times.
But, at the same time I'm believing for many more opportunities to cry in 2010 if it means more changed lives and the Gospel of Christ spreads.
Reflect and Review
- It was a tough Sunday for attendance, especially in the 2nd service. We're putting out the rally call this week so we can have a great bounce back this coming Sunday for our Thanksgiving service.
- It's easy for pastors to feel down after a poorly attended Sunday. It's amazing how much emotion is tied to attendance. Me included.
- When low Sundays happen, we do three things: 1) we compare this year's attendance to last year's attendance, apples-to-apples. This way we get a broad comparison and do not let a bad Sunday define how the church is doing; 2) we do a flock check. We go through the church and find out if people are traveling, sick, etc.; 3) we make a call to rally to church the next week. We don't "wink" at a low Sunday, we fight back and make a trumpet call to the house of God.
- Getting closer to releasing our Essentials class materials. I'm looking forward to implementing this part of our discipleship process.
- I really enjoyed preaching about why Christ-followers need to go to church. I love talking about the church.
- Our canned food drive is under way as prepare to serve our community with gift boxes over the holidays.
- Gearing up for our Christmas series: "Christmas Conspiracy: how Christmas can still change the world."
- Reading a great book on raising boys (I have three), "Wild Things". Some really good insight on why boys behave the way they do, and how parents, coaches, teachers, etc. can nurture boys into men.
- Gonna be another great week!
Reflect and Review
- Moved out of the church house this past Saturday. It's the end of an era for GBCK. We're in temporary offices until we can land in something more permanent.
- Completed part 2 of our FAQ series. We addressed the question, Why do bad things happen to good people? The honest answer is there is no simple answer. However, we discussed some "markers" we can look for along the way, especially when trying to navigate the problem of pain and suffering.
- I'm digging our new "Family Zone" at the back of the cafeteria. We're trying to make it comfortable for families with young children. We're currently looking for some folding rocking chairs for nursing mothers.
- This was the first Sunday trying out a new volunteer rotation for the operations crew. Seemed to work well, and hopefully we can give more breaks to the crew. It's hard work to create a comfortable and compelling environment for people to meet Jesus every week. Our ops team is outstanding!
- I love seeing how new people are "biting" into God. You can almost see God working things out in their lives.
- I feel as excited about the church as I did when we first started three years ago.
- With that said, there's lots to do to move us into the next season. This means higher leadership and change. Gonna be painful at times, but so necessary.
- I'm going to start carrying a BB gun when I preach. We had two birds fly into the cafeteria this Sunday. It's not the first time too. I'm going to shoot one soon. (Just joking, don't write me angry emails.)
- The Xchange youth service was great! Lots of new kids, really inspiring testimonies and music, and as always, choke food. Don't forget: Chun Wah Kam (across Kapolei theaters, 7pm, Fridays).
- We cannot stop reaching people for Jesus. God's desire is that none should perish and that all would come to repentance. Let God's desire be our mission!
Reflect and Review: Nov. 1
- Kicked off our FAQ series with the first question: "How can there be one true relgion?" Tough topic but the bottom line is all faith systems make exclusive claims, it's a matter of which faith system eliminates divisiveness rather than creates it.
- The Christian Gospel is the only system that leads one away from arrogance and superiority.
- Loved our meeting with the small group leaders. I love hearing how people are developing their faith, deepening their connections, and devoting their lives to God's mission. Our small groups are about leading people toward faith, connection, and life.
- Four teenagers got saved the other week at our new youth service at Chun Wah Kam. So stoked! There's a good momentum in the youth leading up to the GRAND OPENING of the youth service at CWK. It's been a soft start up until now.
- Xchange youth ministry GRAND OPENING this Friday, Nov. 6, 7pm, Chun Wah Kam. They begin their "Die Hard" series.
- Great time of sharpening with the Hawaii EN pastors. Main takeaway: pruning is always healthy despite the pain. Plan for pruning. You prune with your values.
- Feel like we are finally begining to clarify our values and the next steps people can take on the faith journey. Gotta work real hard to be simply clear. We have more to go, but we're working on it.
- Getting ready to move out of the ministry house this Saturday. It's bitter-sweet. It's time for GBCK to move on from the house, yet the house was a great ministry tool. I will miss hosting pastors and missionaries the most.
- Added two more people to our Team Grace operations crew today. That is so huge! It's a lot of work to create a compelling and comfortable environment for pepole to meet Jesus every week - but it's totally worth it.
- The Lord added a key family to the church recently. They are ready to rock-n-roll big time. It's seems God adds key people to the church right when you need them. God's timing is always perfect.
- I started going over my messages with Dane before I preach them on Sunday. At times I'll actually preach to Dane. It is so great to get feedback, input, and ideas. It really helps to clarify my thoughts. It's a good discipline.
- Had good fun trick-or-treating with some friends on Saturday. Halloween is one of the greatest opportunites to connect with the neighborhood; it's very missional.
- Gearing up for another great week.
